Where in East Lothian is this building?

Question

Where in the county is this building? It’s been in the news lately, so what does this image tell us about the roof??

This poser is also posted, as usual, on our own HHS Facebook page where you can read other contributors’ answers or comments.

Answer

This shows the roof of the Tweeddale Arms, Gifford.  Near the base of the chimney stack, there is a slanting stone.  This is a ‘thack stane’ to steer water away from a thatched roof. The gap between it and the slates shows the thickness of the thatch.   Although the Hays at one time owned slate quarries near Stobo, it’s possible this section of the roof was originally thatched.
