Town tours prove popular with the public

As part of East Lothian Archaeology and Heritage Fortnight the History Society ran a number of events including talks and an archaeological dig but we have had particularly good feedback regarding the guided tours by local experts. Jon Cooper, our very own conflict archaeologist, gave several tours of the town’s siege defences and Blue Badge Guide Lorna Colvin-MacLean delved into the archives of the John Gray Centre before leading a tour of the Hidden Toun. With Jon Cooper and Marie Macpherson, Lorna gave tours on the themes of how and why St Mary’s church survived the siege of 1548/9 and the church’s role as the cradle of the Reformation. The tours organised by Lorna were particularly appreciated by the society because they raised £460 that will be used to further promote the history of the town. A donation of £135 was made to St Mary’s Church by the Society for special access inside the Church and we hope to collaborate with St Mary’s for future tours.

Following the success of the events the society is exploring ways to make themed tours of Haddington a more regular event so do keep an eye open for posters around the town and the events page on our website.
