Did you know?

Where would you find one of these faces in Haddington?

Question

Which one of these faces is from Haddington?  Where is it and what is remarkable about the building where it’s sited?

For bonus points, where are the other two (Not in Haddington)?

This poser is also posted, as usual, on our own HHS Facebook page and also Old Haddingtonshire FB page where you can read other contributors’ answers or comments.

Here’s our answer:

Face 1 is in Perth Museum and is prehistoric.  Face 2 is on a house in Old Melrose and is probably from the original abbey.  It’s early medieval.

Face 3, on the right, is in the close stretching back from Lodge Street.  It’s carved into the side of a window in the last building of a short stretch of properties.  These properties are quite ancient.

The first, house facing the John Grey Centre, is the oldest domestic property in the town, dating to the first quarter of the sixteenth century.  The original floor of beaten earth and stones was exposed in recent works. It’s at least 40 cms lower than the current pavement.
