Roll of Honour

November Question: As Remembrance Day approaches, cast your eye over this question and perhaps add your comments on our Facebook page.

Q.  Where in the county is this WW1 Roll of Honour and how is it unusual?

The Roll is much faded but a copy has been made by HHS and lodged with the John Gray Centre.

Answer to the above:

Bolton kirk.   It’s unusual in that it includes not only the names of those in the parish who died and those who survived but something of their war experiences including the theatre they served in and any injuries suffered including gun shots, bayonet wounds, gas attacks and being kicked by a horse.  Most served on the Western Front but in this extract we also have Cameroons, Palestine and  Mesopotamia.     Movingly, amongst those who served some have chosen not to record such experiences, possibly for them best forgotten.
