What was the purpose of this metal column?

Haddington Railway Station

Q.  What was the function of this metal column on the site of Haddington’s railway station?

This time we don’t know the answer to this question but hope that one of our readers may be able to come up with an answer. Please respond to the post on our Facebook Group page here or on Old Haddingtonshire Facebook page.

We’ve had a couple of comments, so far, on our HHS Facebook page:

From a Lost Haddington post in 2013 – “Sept 1961 and the Railway station yard looking towards what’s Roodlands hospital today. Today you’d be standing in the Hospital Road Industrial Estate about in line with the new Music Lamp House building. There’s still a remnant of this photo in existence today – the stand for the crane that’s in foreground of the photo still stands in the Hire Centre’s storage area, (its on your right if you’re driving into the Industrial Yard). The line going off to the left is the Longniddry line, and George writes the Crane is now believed to be at the Boat of Garten Line (in 1961, so unlikely there today), the Weighbridge adjacent to Hospital Road, and in the distance behind the Weighbridge you can also see the old Slaughterhouse (there’s a 1910s / 20s photo hosted on these pages). On the right of Hospital Road, the building with the curved roof is Wyllies.”

This comment was posted on behalf of Nicola Bolton’s husband, John: Some photos of a scale model of a crane and its pillar plus an actual crane at Winston Yard.
