What’s odd about this Haddington street name?

Abbot’s View

Q.  What’s odd about this Haddington street name?

Who is the Abbot that this sign refers to?   The street faces the site of the old Abbey of St Mary to the east of the town where Abbey Mill stands.

Answer

Who’s the Abbot?   The street faces the site of the old Abbey of St Mary to the east of the town where Abbey Mill stands. The Abbey was rich. Most of the land between the town and the Abbey was Abbey property. But abbots are in charge of Monks and our abbey was a convent, founded 1158, and home to around 24 nuns with a Prioress in charge.  Nuns’ View or Prioress’ View would be correct.

You can read more about the Abbey on our website and you can see what others are saying about Abbot’s View on our HHS Facebook page or Old Haddingtonshire Facebook page here.
