East Lothian Archaeology & Heritage Fortnight

2 – 17 September 2023

Haddington’s History Society is pleased to take part in the East Lothian Archaeology & Heritage Fortnight

Join us as we celebrate East Lothian’s rich heritage during our annual fortnight of events. Come along to one of the guided walks, talks, events and excavations being held throughout the county.  There is something for everyone to dig into the past!

Our contribution to the East Lothian Archaeology & Heritage Fortnight will coincide with the 1st talk of the Society’s season, which takes place on Thursday 7 September at 7.30pm in the West Church, Haddington.

The planned talk by Coralie Mills on the Dendrochronology of St Mary’s has unfortunately had to be canceled through illness but Ailsa Fortune has very kindly offered to stand in with a wonderful replacement talk –

The Parthenon Marbles and the Local Connection.

Mary – Mary Nisbet, Countess of Elgin – played a part in bringing the now called Parthenon Marbles to the British Museum. In the spring of 1802, Lord Elgin arrived in Athens where, thanks to Mary’s influence with the sultan, they were allowed to remove sculptures from the Parthenon.’ Interestingly enough she had an affair with Robert Ferguson whose statue is right at the crossroads at Station Road in Haddington.
